General Definitions Temperate fruit requires a distinct cold dormant period. The general areas are those latitudes between the tropics and the polar circles. Subtropical fruit grow in areas where the coldest month has a mean temperature between 13 and 18 oC. Tropical fruit require substantial heat for fruit ripening. As a result, most tropical fruit grow between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn around the Equator. An excellent reference is: Jackson, D.I. and Looney, N.E. 1999.
